Services for Children

People Places provides a continuum of therapeutic and educational services throughout western and central Virginia. While treatment foster care remains our primary programmatic focus, other services have strengthened our capacity to serve challenging youth and their families and to play a stronger service role both in our local communities and nationally.

Refer A Child
Do you know a child that could use People Places’ help? Find out the steps necessary when referring a child for foster care or adoption.

Treatment Foster Care
A foster family-based treatment program serving emotionally disturbed children and youth as an alternative to hospitalization and residential treatment.

Foster-to-Adopt
Our supported adoption program provides the same level of support and training to adoptive families and children as we deliver through our therapeutic foster care service.

Individual and Family Counseling
Licensed and experienced staff understand the needs of foster and adoptive children and families and bring special expertise in the areas of attachment, complex trauma, attention-deficit disorder, physical and sexual abuse, parent-child communication, and child behavior management training.

Independent Living Services
People Places offers a continuum of services including special Mentoring for older youth transitioning to lesser-restrictive community living.

Pygmalion School
An alternative special education K-8 school for children with emotional disturbances and disorders, general and specific learning disorders, intellectual disabilities and other health impairments.

Equine Facilitated Programs
Equine facilitated therapy serves both handicapped and able-bodied riders in programs that highlight the application of communication skills in order to achieve physical, mental, and emotional goals.

COACH Program (Community Assisted Adult-Child Help)
Do you know someone over the age of 18 who left the Foster Care system, and struggles in the transition to adulthood? Are you that person? Find out how to get help through the COACH Program.

Summer Training Program (STP)
People Places’ Summer Training Program (STP) is an 8-week opportunity for young people to learn job readiness skills while earning money and having fun. STP serves challenging youth between 12 and 18.

Family Mentor Services
Family Mentors provide support and guidance individually to parents to prevent a child's placement in alternative care or to assist reunification.

Intensive In-Home Services
A licensed, Medicaid-eligible home-based intervention program provides crisis treatment, individual/family counseling, in-home therapy, parenting education, case coordination and management for children and families who need intensive support to remain safely together.
