Equine Facilitated Programs



Debbie Winters is Ride with Pride's Program Director

Ride With Pride has been a partner in the Staunton community since 1990. This not-for-profit organization serves both handicapped and able-bodied riders in programs that are based on equine facilitated therapy, as defined by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). It incorporates the application of communication skills in order to achieve physical, mental, and emotional goals. People Places and Ride With Pride began their partnership in 2001, providing programs for area youth.

Ride with Pride offers programs in three categories:

Therapeutic Horsemanship Program
Therapeutic Horsemanship
  • Teaches communication skills
  • Works towards improving riding skills to the best of the riders' ability
  • Includes participation in clinics and local horse shows
  • Individualized goal setting
Summer Day Camp
  • Provides an opportunity for individuals with any disabilities to participate in learning activities to the best of their abilities
  • Development of safe horsemanship skills
  • Emphasis on social skills, communication, problem solving, and improving self-esteem and self-confidence

Image Enhancement Program
Work Skills Group
  • Combines horsemanship, volunteerism, and pre-vocational training
  • Emphasis is on developing appropriate work skills and improving social skills
  • Development of problem solving skills, impulse control, and responsibility
Horse Club
  • For youth ages 8-13, that have been a part of our therapeutic riding program who want to increase their knowledge and exposure to equine activities
  • Participation in clinics and off-site equine related programs
  • Emphasis on improving social skills, communication, and self-confidence

Equine facilitated Psychotherapy Program
Anger Management
  • Helping community youth develop healthy skills in which to express emotions
  • Emphasis on listening, relaxation, empathy, problem solving
  • Learning assertiveness as an alternative to passive or aggressive behavior
Counseling
  • Under development in 2004
  • Staffed by licensed professionals
  • Offers individuals a chance to heal from loss, abuse, or trauma
  • Emphasizes self-exploration. Communication skills, self-awareness, empathy, and boundary setting
