People Places' Family Mentor Program focuses on the preservation and/or reunification of children's placement with their home of origin. Services are appropriate for children living with natural parents, relatives or adoptive placements. The Family Mentor works with individual families to provide hands on assistance. People Places' Family Mentors are selected to provide effective models for the parents they are paired with. Credible models can be more effective teachers of parenting skills that are identified in individually designed treatment plans. The service is designed to take place in the home or in other appropriate community settings. Thus, Family Mentors may work directly with the child with the goal of teaching parents skills to manage child behavior.
The goals of Family Mentor work are identified in individually designed plans for parent self-sufficiency, self management, parenting skills, social skill building, anger management, academic and vocational guidance, community awareness and other goals to solidify the family system. The Family Service Coordinator, an experienced social work professional, works with referring agencies, parents and Family Mentors to identify goals and objectives for the Family Mentor Services. The Family Service Coordinator provides direct supervision of all Family Mentor Services and activities. Most often Family Mentors assist parents in their integration of newly acquired skills through modeling, education and goal based plans. Services are planned according to the needs of the child and family.
People Places, Inc. has supported the mission from its beginning, that children should be raised in families whenever it is safe to do so. The goal of Family Mentor Services is to protect children through the enhancement of family capabilities, so that the child can remain in the household safely while restoring the family to an acceptable level of functioning.
