Who We Are, What
We Do
People
Places is dedicated to the simple notion that all children –
no matter how troubled or troubling – need families. We
exist to help children and their families heal the wounds of
abuse and neglect. We place youngsters with emotional problems
with trained foster parents who offer them care, guidance and
the opportunity to learn responsible family living. We work
with their parents wherever possible to help them put their
own lives in order and to raise their children with love and
skill. For children who cannot return home, we offer a very
special kind of adoption program to help them and their
adoptive parents with the support they both need to translate
their hopes into lasting commitments.
What Is a
"Teaching" Foster Parent?
Teaching Parents are specially trained foster parents who work
with the support of a professional team of social workers,
counselors and educators to care for challenging youngsters
and help them overcome problems that could put them in
institutions or hospitals instead of families. Teaching
Parents are both caregivers and teachers. Working at home,
they help carry out treatment plans designed to help children
learn the skills they need to handle their feelings, to build
good relationships with others, to succeed in school, and to
be responsible members of a family and community. Teaching
Parents receive ongoing training, round-the-clock support,
respite care and a solid income in addition to basic foster
care expenses.
How About
Adoption?
Over
the years since we began as a therapeutic foster care program,
we have seen many of our children adopted by Teaching Parents.
With rare exceptions, these adoptions last - even
though the rate of failed adoption is disturbingly high for
children with serious emotional and behavioral problems. We
believe that a good measure of this success is due to the kind
of support our Teaching Parents receive. Through our Supported
Adoption program, adoptive families receive the same intensity
and quality of service as do our Teaching Parents. They become
part of an extended family of support that covers the expense
of specialized treatment and provides ongoing subsidy payments
to help cover the true cost of raising a youngster with
special needs.
