People Places
Services
Over the past three
decades, People Places has grown to include a variety of
therapeutic and educational services offered through two
locations - Staunton and Charlottesville. We are honored to
have been named a national model program in 1992 by the Child
Welfare League of America. While treatment foster care remains
our primary programmatic focus, other services have
strengthened our capacity to serve very challenging youth and
their families and to play a stronger service role both in our
local communities and nationally.
- Treatment Foster Care
.
A foster family-based treatment program serving emotionally
disturbed children and youth as an alternative to
hospitalization and residential treatment. Intensive foster
parent training and support from experienced professionals
with low caseloads allows therapeutic work in a normalizing
family setting. Available
at both our Charlottesville and Staunton sites.
- Supported
Adoption.
In adoption - as in foster family care - children with
serious emotional and behavioral problems experience the
highest rate of placement disruption. Traditional approaches
to adoption for these youngsters too often end with yet
another loss, another move and another confirmation that
"no one wants me". Over the past three decades,
our Teaching Parents have adopted many of our children. Such
adoptions rarely have failed. Our supported adoption program
is designed to provide the same type, intensity and quality
of support to adoptive families and children as we deliver
through our therapeutic foster care service. Available
at both Charlottesville and Staunton sites.
- Individual and Family Counseling.
Our
staff of Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Clinical
Social Workers, and a Licensed Clinical Psychologist bring
extensive experience to work with children and their family
members. Special areas of expertise include
attention-deficit disorder, physical and sexual abuse
issues, substance abuse counseling, parent-child
communication, and child behavior management training. Available
at both our Charlottesville and Staunton sites.
- Independent
Living Services and
Training
serves
several purposes and populations. For adolescents preparing
for independence, we offer groups on how to find and keep a
job, on human sexuality, education support and daily living
skills. For youth and adults, we have developed special
groups combining clinical support and skill training for
such areas as Anger Management and Surviving Sexual Abuse.
The number of group sessions varies by topic area; sessions
generally run two to three hours each and are offered to
youth placed in our treatment foster care program and to
youth from our local communities. Available
at our Staunton site.
- Pygmalion
School.
An alternative special education school for children with
emotional and learning disorders, grades one through eight.
Small, self-contained classrooms and low staff-to-student
ratios help us teach children whose behavior is unacceptable
in a public school setting. Pygmalion is available to
children placed in our treatment foster care program and to
students referred from local school districts. Available
at our Staunton site.
- Equine Facilitated Programs.
Equine facilitated therapy is a program that has had a tremendous
impact since its inception in 2001 as a combined effort between People Places and Ride With Pride, another not-for-profit organization. This coordinated focus serves both
handicapped and able-bodied riders in programs that highlight the application of communication
skills in order to achieve physical, mental, and emotional goals.
Available
at our Staunton site.
- COACH Program (Community Assisted Adult-Child Help)
Currently a pilot project in the Charlottesville-Albemarle community, COACH is an opportunity for public and private agencies to forge a partnership to help young adults, age 18+, who have left the foster care system. Volunteer Mentors will be trained and supported to assist and encourage these young adults who do not have family resources to provide support and guidance as they continue to transition into adulthood. If you would like to learn more about COACH and/or this volunteer opportunity, please contact Sandy Richardson via email or telephone at (434) 979-0335.
