Our Services

Parenting Skills Training (PST)
Teaching and Learning with Children in Care

Skilled caregivers are the heart of an effective treatment foster care program. Our original Parenting Skills Training was the first pre-service curriculum developed specifically for therapeutic caregivers.
A complete revision of the curriculum was published in 2009, after three years of intensive focus.

This new nine-session, 27 hour preservice package balances caregiver self-awareness with skills to promote trauma recovery and child behavior change. The new PST includes content typically mandated by states for foster care generally, while adding a competency-based TFC emphasis on relationship, trauma, attachment and the neurology of healing. The curriculum is evidence-linked, establishing a solid foundation for a variety of evidence-based interventions at the program level.

Technical Assistance Model
With new programs, we offer a sequenced set of consultation and training offerings as a complete technical assistance package. These offerings may be purchased separately or together depending on your agency's needs and resources. The package includes:

  • Program Development/Start Up Consultation
  • Staff Training - Line, Supervisory and Clinical
  • Therapeutic Caregiver Training
  • Follow Up Consultation

Major Projects
People Places' complete technical assistance program has been delivered in settings ranging from single-site individual agency projects to multi-state efforts. We have provided start-up assistance to more than 100 programs throughout the U.S. and Canada. Since 1988, People Places has assisted the development of Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC) programs throughout New York State and continues extensive training and consultation to these programs today.

The ABCs of In-Home Problem Solving
Self guided instruction in behavior analysis and intervention planning for staff and parents working with troubled youth in family settings.

Additional Training
People Places offers a variety of day-long workshops on specific aspects of treatment foster care programming.

Costs
Onsite training includes a fee of $1000-1200/training day, travel and per diem expenses based on local agency rates. Training fees may be reduced with multiple purchases of the PST package. Several agencies in the same geographic area may band together to purchase materials and training to reduce individual agency costs.
