What are the requirements to become a Foster Parent?

We work with a wide range of individuals and families of all compositions! Applicants must be physically and emotionally healthy enough to be caregivers while providing a stable and suitable home environment with appropriate space for children.

How is People Places different than other foster care agencies?

Founded in 1973, People Places was instrumental in establishing and shaping treatment foster care, locally and nationally. People Places provides an array of foster care, adoption and community based services and programs. Our knowledgeable and attentive staff works closely with foster families throughout their journey as foster parents. Small caseloads allow us to provide individualized support to your family and the children placed in your home. We also offer 24/7 on-call, crisis support.

What age or types of children will we be matched with?

People Places works with children of varying ages (from birth to 21 years old) and often with sibling groups. Because every child’s situation is unique, we look for foster parents who can be patient and understanding of all medical, behavioral, and emotional needs.

What does it cost to become a certified parent?

There is no cost associated with becoming a certified foster parent. Additionally, you will receive a tax-free monthly payment based on the needs of the child.

Where do the children come from?

Children in foster care come from our local communities. We receive referrals from Department of Social Services (DSS) agencies in Staunton, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, and surrounding areas. These children have been removed from their homes due to neglect or abuse.

What are some reasons children come into foster care?

Typically, reasons for removal from a home can include (but are not limited to): family neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, medical issues, and generally unfit living environments.

Can I work and foster a child or children?

Absolutely! Many of our foster parents work full time and still successfully care for their foster children.

Do I have to be married and is there a minimum age requirement to foster?

We certify parents based on their individual and relationship stability. You do not have to be married to become a foster parent. We certify single, married, and cohabitating individuals and couples.
